Lieutenant Brianne Holmes of the Toledo Police Department presented a request to accept a $28,508.04 grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council under the Ohio Criminal Justice Information Services (OCJIS) Violence Against Women Act program to support the department's domestic-violence unit.
Holmes said the grant will be deposited to the operations grant fund and used for training, equipment and overtime for domestic-violence investigations. She said there is no cash match required but the grant includes an in-kind salary match of $9,502.68 representing a portion of an officer's time. Holmes said the department has one dedicated full-time domestic-violence investigator, supported by special victims investigators and other detectives who take domestic-violence cases.
Council members asked whether the department maintains data on violence against women; Holmes said the department retains statistics but did not specify which metrics. Members asked for referrals to receive the department's statistics and for follow-up information on staffing and whether the department coordinates with domestic-violence courts. Holmes said the training funds will increase investigators' skills and confirmed coordination with courts.
At agenda review, the chair recommended SAP (suspension for placement) so the grant acceptance could be moved to the council docket; no formal vote occurred at agenda review.
