Carson Zollinger, an artist and long-time arts advocate, appeared before the New Castle County boards and commissions subcommittee April 15 as the nominee to the county's Public Arts Commission; no vote was held and the nomination will be considered at next week's council meeting.
Carson Zollinger, nominee to the New Castle County Public Arts Commission, appeared before the boards and commissions subcommittee April 15 to introduce himself and describe his experience in arts advocacy.
Zollinger told members he was "very excited when the commission was first set up" and said public art can connect residents who otherwise may not visit museums. "My background, even though as an artist, that's number one what I am, but secondly, I've been heavily involved in arts advocacy, including being one of the founding members of the Delaware Contemporary, including being the president of the board and serving 16 years on the board," he said. "Also served on the Delaware State Arts Council for 6 years, and I am now currently a board member of the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover, Delaware."
Madam Chair told the committee the subcommittee does not take final votes on these nominations at the briefing but forwards them for formal consideration at the full council meeting the following week. Council members who spoke during the briefing praised Zollinger's experience. Councilman Street thanked him for volunteering and said the arts have shaped his family; Councilman Carter and other members said Zollinger's background would be an asset to the county's public art efforts.
The nomination was presented to the subcommittee but not voted on at the April 15 meeting; the chair said the council will consider the nomination at its next formal meeting.
