Public commenters and committee members at the Sept. 11 Disposal Site Advisory Committee meeting told county staff the committee's meetings had not been adequately publicized and asked the county to improve notification methods.
Salt Creek Valley resident Kevin Kanaga told the committee he would not have known about the meeting without emailing the chair. "You can't do your volunteer job without the community input and the dialogue created between the operator and the community," Kanaga said, urging the committee to ask Benton County to notify the public about future meetings via existing county distribution lists and other channels.
Committee members agreed to evaluate current notification channels. Several members suggested coordinating with the county public information officer, posting on the county website calendar and distributing meeting notices to Benton County Talks Trash and other local lists. The chair asked staff to inventory current publicity methods and report back at the next meeting; committee members agreed to revisit the subject when a public information officer or county liaison could confirm distribution processes.
On routine business the committee accepted minutes from a prior meeting. DSAC member Jeff moved to accept the minutes as posted; Rachel seconded and Chuck provided an additional second. The chair called the vote: "All in favor of accepting? Aye." No members voiced opposition. The committee chair declared the motion passed and the minutes accepted.
Ending
The committee scheduled follow-up on publicity and internal processes at its next meeting and agreed to circulate a clean, editable draft of the 2021 community-concerns annual report before the next session to allow review and tracked changes.
