Fayetteville board approves Ralph Baskins entrance upgrade, agrees to buy adjacent parcel

Board members approved a motion to authorize the facilities committee chair to begin signing construction contracts and start the capital project to change and upgrade the Ralph Baskins School entry. The board took that action by voice vote during the Facilities and Transportation Committee report at the meeting held at Ralph Baskins School.
The facilities committee also asked the board to approve buying the property across from Fayetteville Middle School from Jeff Deaton for $240,000. The board approved the purchase but the seller’s title appears to include a historical deed restriction requiring professional office use. Committee members reported that the district’s attorney advised the restriction “should not be an issue” if the city or county provides a letter of support and that heirs could be asked to amend or remove the restriction. The board approved the purchase with the understanding that counsel and staff would pursue modification of the restriction before final use decisions are made.
Committee members said bids for a separate FEMA-funded project drew strong interest at a recent pre-bid meeting; at least three bidders attended the meeting in the school multipurpose room. The committee also reported that the paving portion of the Ralph Baskins contract is expected to cost less than budgeted, helping offset higher-than-expected construction bids for the entry work.
No dollar vote tallies were recorded in the meeting minutes or transcript; all approvals were completed by voice vote and announced as approved.
The board did not set a construction start date in public session; staff noted further contracting steps will proceed now that the board authorized signature authority and the Deaton purchase has been approved conditionally.
