Kossuth County Roads Director Doug updated the board April 8 on equipment, damage and staffing.
Doug said the county experienced axle failures on several tractor mowers last fall and instructed a return to a lighter winged-mower configuration for affected tractors; the change costs about $26,000 per tractor for equipment and installation. A tractor involved in a collision with a train is under insurance review; crews parked the machine and noted a leaking tilt-blade cylinder when it was later used, and the county is awaiting the insurer’s determination before repair.
Doug also showed photographs of burn damage to guardrail posts and wing planking on a small bridge on the north line of Section 12, Garfield Township, after a controlled burn that reached the roadside pile. He estimated materials at roughly $1,000 and total repair costs perhaps one-and-a-half to two times materials for labor; he said county staff reported the incident to law enforcement and the responsible party acknowledged the burn. Doug asked the contractor or individual to notify their insurer, and the board discussed possible repair handling.
Additional operational notes: crack-filling and chip-seal work were underway on county roads; a road-department safety meeting is scheduled April 25. Doug also noted uncertainty over proposed state property-tax/valuation legislation and its potential impact on road funding and levy calculations.
