The University Heights City Council approved contracts for its tree program, awarding a $53,595.90 contract to Johnson's Landscaping for the citywide fall tree-planting project and a $79,497 contract to Parks Tree Incorporated for tree pruning and removals through March 2026.
Service Department representative Pennington said bids opened October 15 and Johnson's Landscaping was the sole bidder for the planting project. The planting contract covers 155 trees to be installed by May 2026 at a per-tree cost the city estimated between about $325 and $339.
For pruning and removal, the city received two bids and recommended Parks Tree Inc. as the low bidder to prune numerous trees and remove 39 trees; work is scheduled for completion by March 2026. The contract requires contractors to notify residents at least one week in advance of any tree removals or plantings.
Councilmembers asked about a cluster of removals noted on Warrensville Center Road. Staff said those trees are ash and the city arborist determined they are not viable, citing the emerald ash borer as a regional problem. Staff said the city will not be planting ash as part of its current program and plans to replace removed trees in next year’s planting cycle.
Both motions passed on roll call with all members voting in the affirmative.
