The University Heights City Council voted to accept a $40,000 Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) safety intervention grant to fund a powered patient cot and loading system for a new ambulance, with the city to pay the remaining $26,545.45.
Fire Chief Perko told council the department first sought the technology in 2013 and successfully obtained BWC funding in 2013–14 and again in 2019–20. The total package price for the cot and loading system is $66,545.45; the BWC granted the $40,000 maximum and the balance will be covered by city funds that are already encumbered for the ambulance purchase.
“...we applied for the grant at a total package of $66,545.45. We received the maximum award from the BWC for $40,000 and the city will owe the balance of $26,545.45,” Chief Perko said, recommending council accept the award and proceed with the purchase so the new ambulance will be fully outfitted.
Councilmember Weiser asked whether the $26,000 was budgeted; Chief Perko said the amount is already encumbered for the new ambulance. A motion to accept the grant passed on a roll call vote with all members present voting in the affirmative.
The grant is intended to reduce injury claims and promote safety and wellness in the fire department by automating lifting and loading of patients into ambulances.
The purchase will be made once formal acceptance paperwork is completed and vendor procurement follows city procedures.
