Commission discusses potential direct sale of surplus brush truck to neighboring department; publication process required

County staff updated commissioners on the status of two surplus brush trucks. One vehicle, ordered first for Victoria, is listed on Purple Wave and had reached about $13,000 in bids. The second truck — undergoing chassis and equipment upgrades in Ellis — drew interest from a neighboring county fire department.
Curt Hoffman said the interested department had not yet made a formal offer. Staff and County Attorney Bill Jeter described a statutory process to publish notice twice and allow an opportunity for competitive offers; after that process the commission could sell directly to a nearby department at an agreed price if statutory notice requirements are met.
Commissioners expressed support for assisting regional partners and directed staff to notify the interested department of the current sale price for the posted truck and, if they choose to make an offer, begin the publication process. If no offer materializes, staff will bring the truck to a future meeting for traditional online sale through Purple Wave.
