The Ellis County Commission approved 15 recipients for the 2025 Ellis County Commission Scholarships.
County Administrator Darren Myers told commissioners the review panel — which included County Treasurer Verne Rooter, HR Manager Jennifer Taylor and Myers — reviewed 17 applications and selected 15 awards. Awardees must attend an Ellis County school and the scholarships are intended for students enrolled at institutions including Fort Hays State University, Fort Hays State Tech Northwest and Hays Academy of Hair Design.
Myers said the scholarship awards are funded from the county sales tax, not property tax. He also said the scholarships are renewable for one additional year if recipients remain enrolled and eligible; the county performs verification in August before dispersing payments.
Commissioners discussed scheduling for award presentations at local schools and noted a conflict for the Victoria presentation date; staff will follow up on which commissioner or local official can represent the county at the Victoria ceremony.
The motion to approve the 15 recipients passed by voice vote, 3-0.
