Jordan School Board approves trips, consent items and several proposals; raises activity fees

The Jordan Public School District School Board on April 14 approved a package of routine and action items that included two overnight student trips, the consent agenda of personnel and donations, and a planned increase to student activity fees.

The board approved an overnight trip request for the 2027 Spanish Club to travel seven days to Puerto Rico and approved a 2026 Jordan High School band and choir trip to New York. Both trip approvals were made by motion and carried with all members saying “aye.” The board also approved the consent agenda, which included the March minutes, monthly finance reports, several donations and recent personnel items (new hires and resignations were listed in the board packet).

In separate motions the board approved a districtwide increase to annual activity fees and family-maximum fee tiers (see related article). The board also agreed to a motion directing administration to work with the Jordan Booster Club on a proposal to install digital scoreboards at Ames Field and in the high school gymnasium; the board motion to direct administration passed.

During the meeting the board heard a substantive presentation from the high school principal outlining a proposal to discontinue naming a valedictorian and salutatorian and to move away from weighted grades; that proposal will be considered further and, if adopted, reflected in the student handbook for future classes.

Votes at the meeting were recorded verbally; for the motions referenced the board chair called for a voice vote and the board responded with “aye,” after which the chair said the motion carries.
