Yankton board adopts K–12 social studies instructional materials aligned to new state standards

The Yankton School District 63-3 board voted to adopt recommended K–12 social studies instructional materials aligned to the district’s updated 2024 state standards.
A district staff member who led the review told the board the materials were selected by committee members who examined alignment to the new standards, emphasized critical thinking and diverse perspectives, and recommended resources that are budgeted for purchase in the 2024–25 school year with implementation in 2025–26. The presenter said the materials were on public display for 30 days and that no public comments were received through the district during that period.
Staff explained the state’s 2024 standards produced more substantial changes than a typical revision, increasing the committee’s workload. The presenter said elementary-level materials developed in partnership with Studies Weekly were written specifically to mirror the state standards and include supplemental read-aloud books and class sets at multiple grade levels.
A motion to approve the recommended K–12 social studies materials passed on roll call. Board discussion noted the extensive committee review and that some district leaders had publicly opposed parts of the state standards earlier but proceeded to adopt the materials required by state adoption.
The curriculum adoption will proceed as budgeted; the board did not request additional study or delay implementation.
