Yankton board opts to end student year May 16; teachers to make up snow days

The Yankton School District 63-3 board voted to adopt the option that keeps students’ last day as May 16 and requires staff to make up two snow days on separate dates.
Dr. Kendall, a district administrator, presented three choices for the board: leave the calendar unchanged, have students return for two makeup days (students and staff), or keep students’ last day on May 16 while staff make up the days. Dr. Kendall told the board the district’s schedule already exceeds Department of Education minimum hours across grade bands.
A board member moved to adopt the option in which students end on May 16 and staff return to make up two days. During discussion a staff member clarified that one draft of the calendar showed teacher work days on May 22–23 with an in-service day on May 20; the motion the board approved, as announced at the meeting, set staff makeup days immediately after student dismissal (the motion text on the record said teachers would come back on May 19 and 20).
During the roll call, board member Joe recorded a “no” vote and other named members recorded “yes.” The motion carried.
Board members did not direct additional study or changes beyond the approved schedule. The agenda packet included Department of Education requirements cited by district staff; board discussion focused on meeting statutory hour requirements and minimizing disruption to families.
