The Sierra Vista Unified School District Governing Board adopted district calendars for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 school years and approved routine consent items at a regular meeting that began at 6 p.m.
The board voted to adopt draft A calendars for both school years after staff described the committee process used to build three options and summarized staff and parent voting results. Valerie Weller, the district public information officer, said the committee considered statutory requirements and staff schedules and noted: "Winter break cannot exceed two weeks according to ARS 15-801." Draft A was selected by staff and parents and was recommended by administration.
A series of routine items were approved by the board during the meeting. The board approved annual leave payouts for employees with balances in excess of policy limits, waived facility fees to allow Cochise County Superintendent staff to use the Rothery Center Atria for a countywide training, and adopted the calendars for the two school years.
Votes at a glance: - Approval of work-session and regular meeting minutes (01/22/2025): approved unanimously (4-0). - Annual leave payout for employees in excess of policy allowances (policy GCD/GCDD): approved unanimously (4-0). - Waiver of facility fees for Cochise County superintendent training (03/28/2025): approved unanimously (4-0). - Adoption of 2025–26 and 2026–27 school calendars (draft A): approved unanimously (4-0). - Adoption of the meeting agenda as presented earlier in the night: recorded as passing 3–1.
Board President Lee presided over the meeting. Administration noted that a calendar-development committee met in November and December, included administrators, teachers, support staff and parents, and returned three draft options for staff and parent consideration. Staff reported 268 staff votes and 401 parent responses across the calendar-selection surveys; draft A was the plurality choice in both groups for 2025–26 and a majority for 2026–27.
The board also handled several procedural requests during the meeting. A proposal from a board member to require human resources to submit certificated and professional applicants' resumes to the board for review was debated and ultimately tabled for legal consultation; the board asked administration to consult legal counsel before further action. A separate proposal to require the curriculum department to publish weekly schedules of classroom instruction and monthly course/module overviews on the public site was discussed; after initial procedural votes and discussion about teacher workload and the district's lesson-plan system, that item was also tabled for a future meeting.
Administration reiterated existing policy references during discussion, noting district policies GCD, GDD and KB and Arizona statutes cited by staff. Weller said that the district already posts Arizona academic standards on the curriculum page and that teachers use an internal lesson-plan platform (Common Curriculum) that principals review; making teacher lesson plans public would require additional work and teacher training.
The board moved on to other agenda items after adopting the calendars and approving consent items. No date for the legal consultation on the resume-review proposal was set during the meeting.
