Buena High students, staff highlight fine arts programs and recent Hawaii trip

District fine arts staff and students described the scope of Sierra Vista Unified School District’s arts programs at the governing board meeting, including band, choir, theater, visual art classes and AP art opportunities, and noted several upcoming concerts and senior capstone presentations.
Presenters said Buena High School offers multiple band and choir ensembles, theater productions, art levels from Art I through AP, and electives such as guitar, piano and music technology. Sophie Hebnis and Sofia Chavez, who identified themselves as members of the International Thespian Society and representatives of Buena’s choir and theater programs, said 11 seniors will present capstone projects in late March seeking the Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency on diplomas. "We invite the board, public, and supporters of the arts to enjoy pieces from our talented and hardworking students' repertoire and celebrate this achievement," Hebnis said.
Staff and students also reviewed a recent choir trip to Hawaii that was approved by the board. Choir teacher Miss Golding and student presenters described a program of performances and cultural exchanges: students visited Kamehameha High School for a school exchange, sang at the USS Missouri, toured the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor, visited the Polynesian Cultural Center and Iolani Palace, and participated in regional competitions. Presenters said 51 people participated in the trip and all returned safely.
District staff urged community members to attend upcoming performances, including the senior capstone presentations, the spring musical Anything Goes, and a series of band and choir concerts in May and June. No formal action accompanied the presentation; it was informational.
