Architect and planners seek Sustainability Commission seats, cite Climate Recovery Ordinance and climate action plan goals

Two applicants who spoke for Sustainability Commission positions on April 14 highlighted professional experience in architecture, planning and transportation as qualifications for supporting Eugene's climate goals.
Jan Filinger, a licensed architect who said he has practiced for 40 years and taught at the University of Oregon, described architecture and development projects focused on energy efficiency and sustainability. Filinger cited Eugene's 2014 Climate Recovery Ordinance and the 2020 Climate Action Plan as "challenging goals" that will require creativity and diligence. He said his design work includes multifamily projects and a 35-unit tiny-home community under construction for the Lummi Nation.
Vanita Murthy (who also applied to the Human Rights Commission) described master's degrees in city and regional planning and public administration and professional experience in transportation planning and commuting studies. Murthy said she would emphasize equitable sustainable transportation and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions tied to commuting patterns.
Both speakers framed implementation and interagency coordination as key tasks for the Sustainability Commission. Councilors did not appoint members at the work session; appointments are scheduled for June 9, 2025.
