The Gardner Edgerton Board of Education approved several operational and administrative items at its May meeting, taking unanimous votes on procurement, program changes and property acquisition.
Chromebook refresh approved The board approved the district’s annual Chromebook refresh for incoming fifth- and ninth-grade students: a purchase of 1,200 devices that includes protective cases, a white-glove service and Chrome licensing. Staff said the district rotates Chromebooks on a four-year cycle and will switch the 5th- and 9th-grade purchases from Dell to Acer after a price and product review. A staff presenter noted Acer raised its price by about $50 per unit on short notice; the board approved the purchase before that increase took effect.
ESOL/ELL programming change approved District staff recommended creating a second English-language learner (ELL) center at Moonlight Elementary while maintaining the existing center at Grand Star Elementary. Staff said about 25 students would be served at Moonlight, the change is intended to be cost-neutral with no additional staffing required, and the move would reduce the number of moves families might face when boundary changes occur. The board approved the recommendation.
Nonresident enrollment: open seats published The board adopted the district’s published open-seat report for nonresident enrollment for the 2025–26 school year. Staff described a two‑pronged capacity test: building-level capacity (buildings above about 85 percent capacity are excluded) and grade-level seat limits; Madison Elementary was listed as closed to nonresident enrollment because it is at or near capacity. The district set a hard cap of two nonresident seats per grade section in its public spreadsheet. Total available nonresident seats for 2025–26 were listed as 61; staff said application windows run Jan. 1–June 30 and parents will be notified on or before July 15.
Land purchase for service center approved The board voted to approve purchase of land and related property for the district’s service center as presented in the meeting packet.
Consent agenda and personnel The board approved the consent agenda (minutes, policy updates, contracts and purchases, curriculum resource requests, library guidance, out-of-state travel, professional development plan, MOU approvals, financial statements and claims) and later approved the human-resources personnel report.
Votes, movers and outcome All motions recorded in the transcript were approved with no recorded opposing votes. Several motions were made and seconded by board members whose names were not captured in the transcript excerpt; all votes were recorded as unanimous with no abstentions.
Ending: District staff said details and published reports (Chromebook specifications, the ELL-program summary and the nonresident open-seat spreadsheet) will be posted for public review on the district website.
