Superintendent Doctor Schumacher delivered the district's superintendent report, congratulating students and staff on awards and outlining several district operational matters, including the school-year calendar, the pending sale of the former Westwood View Elementary School property and advocacy on state and federal education policy.
Schumacher said built-in calendar flexibility means the district will "follow the board approved calendar as it is currently published with no changes." He listed school-year end dates: seniors' last day on May 16, pre-kindergarten on May 22 and kindergarten through 11th grade on May 23; May 20 will be a teacher work day, May 29 a teacher flex day. He noted the board reserves the right to change the calendar in emergencies.
On the former Westwood View property, Schumacher said the district remains under contract to sell to the city of Westwood for a proposed park even though Westwood voters previously rejected the plan. The contract's due-diligence period runs through June 1, 2025; the contract may be canceled during due diligence.
Schumacher said the district is monitoring legislative activity in Topeka and statements from Washington, D.C.; he said the district and its lobbyist will keep the board informed and that district leaders will submit a letter to the district's three federal representatives expressing concerns about proposed federal changes, including conversations about the future of the U.S. Department of Education. Schumacher reminded the board that the district's community-led strategic plan adopted last June provides ongoing direction for district work.
No board action was taken on these items; the superintendent concluded the report and the meeting moved to the scheduled discussion items.
