Superintendent Brian Huff and board members publicly thanked the community and three volunteers from the district's Vote Yes committee after voters approved a $100 million bond for Gardner Edgerton schools.
Huff told the Board of Education the district will sell the approved bonds and finance them over 25 years, and said the district is anticipating an interest rate of about 4.5 percent. He said the district plans to present two formal items at the board's next regular meeting: approval to refinance the district's 2016A bonds and approval to issue the newly authorized $100 million in bonds. “This board is gonna have the opportunity next month to officially vote on that, on adopting those two sales, the reissuing of 2016 bonds, refinancing, and then the issuing of the hundred million dollar bonds that we just approved with the voters,” Huff said.
Why it matters: the bond proceeds will fund facility and program changes described by district staff. Huff emphasized that the district will publicly post detailed timelines and involve the community and the board when it determines school boundary adjustments and project sequencing. He said the district intends to be “good stewards” of the funds and will provide more information on the district website and in future community meetings.
Key details cited by Huff included: - Bond authorization: $100,000,000 approved by voters (as referenced by district staff). - Planned financing term: 25 years. - Anticipated interest rate: about 4.5 percent. - Expected interest savings from refinancing 2016A bonds: about $3,000,000 (district estimate).
Huff said the district will publish construction timelines and boundary-drawing plans as the projects progress, and noted boundary changes will be a public, board-involved process because individual assignments to elementary schools will affect families. He asked the public to consult the district website for details and future meeting dates.
The board recognized three Vote Yes volunteers — Mike Casey, Kaylee Lehman and Laura Carpenter — who the superintendent said helped with fundraising, signs and social media for the bond campaign. The volunteers were invited to come forward and were thanked by board members and district staff.
Ending: Huff said the district will return next month with formal documents from its financial advisers and solicit board action to execute the refinancing and the new bond sale. The district scheduled additional public information and timelines to answer questions about project sequencing, playground and elementary-school impacts and when new buildings and conversions will occur.
