Board opens first reading of support-services policies; member seeks parent notification after lockdown drills

The board conducted a first reading of Section E support-services policies and discussed a proposed addition to EBCC, the district’s emergency lockdown policy, to notify parents after routine lockdown drills.
Board member Ray Cardona requested adding language under the drills portion of EBCC so parents would be informed immediately after a drill to reduce alarm. “What happens a lot is that I get calls and texts and even myself as a parent get concerned because all you hear is that we're in a lockdown,” Cardona said during the discussion, asking the board to include a line item under communication to notify parents that a drill has occurred.
Superintendent Dr. Steinhoff said the district has the technology and that adding a follow-up notification protocol after drills is prudent and feasible: "I don't think that there's a problem with us adding that language and that being our protocol," he said, noting the district would not send messages while a drill is in progress but would notify families immediately afterward.
