Board approves contract agreements, workers’ compensation increase and amends March minutes

The Aberdeen School District 06-1 Board of Education approved multiple administrative and contractual items during its April 4 meeting, including hourly and certified staff negotiated agreements, administrator contracts, workers’ compensation coverage and an amendment to March minutes that replaced a roofing vendor for a Central High School project.
Board members voted by voice and roll-call votes across the consent and action items. The board amended the March 24 minutes to strike the approval of Hub City Roofing and replace it with Guarantee Roofing and Sheet Metal for the Central High School re-roofing project. The amendment was moved by Mister Brian Sharp and carried by voice vote.
The board approved a workers’ compensation agreement after staff reported the district’s premium rose 20.7 percent — $56,000 — compared with the prior year. A staff member described the increase as based on a three-year average of claims and noted the district represents about 14 percent of the pool, contributing to the added cost. The staff member said the actuary expects a flat or decreased rate next year. The workers’ compensation agreement was approved on a voice vote.
Board members also approved negotiated agreements reached with the district's bargaining groups. The packages the board approved included a 1 percent salary increase and a 6 percent insurance increase for the represented groups; the board recorded separate approvals for the hourly staff negotiated agreement, the AEA negotiated agreement and the administrator negotiated agreement.
The administrator negotiated agreement was approved by roll-call vote. The clerk recorded individual board responses during the roll call; the record in the meeting transcript includes multiple "aye" responses and at least one recorded abstention. The board also approved district administrator contracts in a separate motion.
Other items approved included the annual South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) membership resolution. The board approved the resolution by voice vote.
