An MVPD spokesperson summarized several recent incidents and a department training session during the Mount Vernon Police Departmentmonthly update video, saying officers made multiple arrests this month and recovered a loaded handgun and ammunition.
The spokesperson said that on the morning of the 7th officers contacted a person camping on privately marked property who "declined to identify himself or leave his camp." The person emerged and, according to the department, slapped an officer before fleeing; officers caught and detained him. MVPD said the person was the same individual profiled in April for overturning trash cans and fleeing from officers. This time, the department said, the person was booked on charges including criminal trespass, resisting arrest, outstanding warrants and two counts of third-degree assault; MVPD also said the person assaulted a corrections deputy at the jail.
Later that week, on the 12th, officers responded to the 3000 block of East College Way after a report of possible drug use in a parked vehicle. The department said officers found a woman "mid attempt with a needle in her arm" and arrested her for use of a controlled substance in public.
In a separate stop after a trespass complaint, officers found a person passed out in a vehicle with a bottle of nitrous oxide. According to MVPD, when officers asked the person to exit the vehicle he ran, was caught and taken into custody. Once detained, officers found in his pocket a loaded high-capacity pistol magazine. Inside the vehicle, the department reported, officers recovered two bottles of flavored nitrous oxide, rifle rounds and a fully loaded handgun matching the magazine. MVPD said the person was 16 years old and was booked on charges including obstructing a law enforcement officer, unlawful inhalation, minor in possession and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The department also described its annual emergency vehicle operations training, which mixes low-speed precision and high-speed control driving. "Most crashes both for us and for the public happen while backing and at low speeds. So we spend time honing those skills," the MVPD spokesperson said, adding that while state law requires the training every two years, Skagit County runs the exercises annually so officers can respond to calls safely and quickly.
No additional identifying information about the arrested individuals was provided in the update. MVPD did not provide specific case numbers or the names of the arrestees during the video.
The incidents were presented as part of the department's regular monthly summary of notable cases and training activities.
