Parish President Jewel reported a temporary road closure and construction work tied to two pump stations, staffing changes in the recreation department, several upcoming community events, and a small month-to-month decline in sales-tax receipts during remarks to the council.
Jewel said County/CC Road is closed and will remain closed for a few weeks while crews work on the pump stations identified in the remarks as “Munch Number 1” and “Munch Number 2.” She told the council that sheet piles and concrete piles are being driven immediately adjacent to the road and that heavy equipment operations create safety risks that prompted the closure. Jewel said a recent test pile at Munch Number 2 “was tested and passed,” and crews removed reaction piles and related equipment so permanent piling can be installed.
The parish president framed the successful test pile as positive news because past test-pile failures required longer pilings and additional expense. She said contractors are building piles to a high standard, using an implied safety margin to ensure stability.
On personnel, Jewel announced two new hires for the recreation department: Alex Romero, described as a native of Bayoucong who participated in the parish recreation program and has coaching experience, and Michael Young, described as a St. Rose native with local coaching experience and a master’s degree. Jewel said the hires are intended to provide continuity as booster-club responsibilities are centralized parishwide and to increase youth participation in recreation programs.
Jewel thanked the United Way of Saint Charles Parish and parish public-works and recreation staff for help setting up the annual “Battle for the Paddle” event, which she said draws more than 250 cooking teams to the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center. She also noted the parish’s participation in National Public Lands Day on Sept. 27 with volunteers and a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crew who performed cleanup and planting in a spillway.
Jewel announced upcoming events and contact details: a veterans luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center (service photos and information may be sent to publicinfo@saintcharlesgov.net); a DHS high-school “parks and recreation night” on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.; and the Primetime Seniors Fall Festival on Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, with RSVP and transportation requests to (985) 783-6683 by Oct. 20.
On finances, Jewel said sales-tax receipts dipped slightly from August 2024 to August 2025, a month-to-month reduction she described as “just under $50,000.” She also said sales-tax revenues are up 5.83% year-to-date — roughly $1.8 million — compared with the first eight months of 2024.
Jewel concluded her report and turned the agenda to the next item.
