Allentown panel refers $132,800 PCCD grant for co-responder program to council

Assistant Chief AC Gress summarized the grant as competitive and described its uses: salary for a crisis intervention specialist who would ride with police as part of a co-responder program, mobile devices and software for field work, uniforms, and funds for program analysis and quarterly reporting to PCCD in line with the commission's framework. Gress said the department will produce an impact report at the end of the grant period and may apply for additional funding based on results.
A community member asked whether a larger, prior joint city-county grant had fallen through; presenters said that a larger joint effort had not proceeded and that funding was pulled back previously. The transcript records that Cedar Crest College will conduct initial analysis for program implementation; presenters said the city may issue a request for proposals (RFP) for further evaluation after initial results are available.
A motion to send Bill 34 to the full council was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The referral places the appropriation before the City of Allentown Council for formal consideration and potential adoption.
