Board rejects two mayoral police‑commission reappointments amid calls to wait for incoming mayor

The Board of Supervisors on May 15 rejected the mayor’s nominations to reappoint Sonia Melara and Joseph Marshall to the San Francisco Police Commission.
The motions to approve the reappointments failed by a 5–6 vote. Supervisor Feuer said she could not support the reappointments because the decisions were premature so close to the mayoral transition; she urged waiting for the incoming mayor, sworn in July, to weigh in on critical appointments to one of the city's most powerful commissions.
Feuer told the board the police commission’s membership matters greatly in the wake of the board’s recent police-reform actions and potential personnel changes within the police department. Several other supervisors echoed concerns about timing and the importance of allowing the next mayor to participate in major commission appointments.
The clerk recorded the vote as five yeses and six noes; the motion therefore failed and the nominees were not reappointed. The mayor’s office will retain authority to renominate or put forward new candidates for those seats.
