The Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution authorizing a multiyear permit for use of portions of Golden Gate Park for a three-day music festival known as Outside Lands, with estimated revenues to the city of approximately $3,600,000.
Supervisor Eric Mar (presented as "Supervisor Marr" in the transcript) urged support for the partnership with promoters Another Planet Entertainment, noting last year's attendance of about 130,000 and that the festival generated $815,000 in revenue for parks. He said the extended partnership is expected to bring about $1,240,000 in revenue to the Recreation and Parks Department in the coming year and that promoters had agreed to local-hiring commitments. "Last year was the first year of the successful festival with 130,000 people participating, which brought in $815,000 to our much needed parks," Mar said.
Supervisor Carmen Chu said she supported the item and noted improved outreach to neighborhoods, commitments from promoters to hire a noise consultant, and ongoing work to reduce traffic and preserve park access during setup and tear-down. "I know that the promoters have agreed to hire a noise consultant so that we can actually measure the ambient noise areas," she said.
The board took a roll call vote; the clerk announced 11 ayes and the resolution was adopted.
The resolution authorizes Recreation and Parks to enter into the multiyear permit and requires the festival operators and city departments to coordinate on noise, traffic, park access and local hiring.
