Board approves consent agenda, school-choice limits, tuition policy and Chartwells dining contract

The DeWitt Public Schools Board of Education on April 14 approved a series of routine and action items, including hiring, out-of-state student trips, school-choice and tuition resolutions for 2025–26, a 2026 commencement date and a district food-service contract.
The board approved the consent agenda, which the superintendent presented as a package including minutes from prior meetings, the treasurer’s report and bills confirmation for March 2025; professional hiring of Andrea Santini as a social studies teacher at Duet Middle School; and out-of-state, overnight paid trips for Duet Middle School eighth graders to Washington and boys and girls teams to Atlanta, Georgia. The motion to approve the consent agenda was moved and supported and the board voted “Aye; motion carries.”
On action items the board adopted the schools-of-choice resolution for the 2025–26 school year: kindergarten through eighth grade — “limited” admission; grades nine through 12 — no school choice (0). Board members discussed that “limited” permits the district to accept one or more students into grades based on available classroom space and prior-year section sizes.
The board also approved the 2025–26 tuition resolution for nonresident high-school (grades 9–12) tuition applicants; the district uses a tuition process rather than school choice at the high-school level.
The board set DeWitt High School commencement for Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 2 p.m. in the high-school gymnasium; approved Dominic Pallone as the district’s parent representative to the Clinton County RESA (CC RESA) Special Education Parent Advisory Committee; and awarded the 2025–26 food-service management contract to Chartwells School Dining Services and authorized the administration to execute the contract.
Board discussion included questions about school-choice mechanics (how “limited” slots were determined and sibling rules) and whether the district would continue a shared dining-services director under the new contract; administrators said the shared model will continue and that additional food-service staff were hired to accommodate free breakfast and lunch requirements.
