District administrators announced that the Berwick Area middle school was selected as one of four middle schools in Pennsylvania to participate in the Empowerment Collaborative, a five-year program designed to bring project-based and career-connected learning into classrooms.
Administrators described the Empowerment Collaborative as a four-phase model (exploration, installation, implementation, sustainment) that begins with a paid exploration year. The district will focus initially on the seventh-grade team; staff said the first year does not require a memorandum of understanding and will allow teachers and students to try the model before committing to later phases.
The program, staff said, includes simulated workplace environments, applied assessments and project-based units that emphasize career readiness. A district representative explained the grant is fully funded for five years and that the district can participate throughout the grant period.
No formal board vote was required for the announcement; administrators said they would follow standard implementation and communication steps with teachers and families.
