Bennington reports: reading focus for improvement plan, major summer-school sign-ups and facility projects

Bennington Public Schools administrators briefed the board on student services, assessment and operations at the April meeting.

Student services and target improvement plan: the district's student-services administrator said state and federal guidance require an annual target-improvement plan; the district will focus this year on reading rather than math. “So we're gonna be looking at reading as our area of focus,” the student-services speaker said, noting the state board's emphasis and the need to benchmark current performance.

Assessment and curriculum adoption: the district reported it is in an adoption year for K–12 social studies. Staff said they met with three publisher teams and will present a recommendation to the full board at the next meeting. The assessment presenter also said the district began state science testing for eighth graders and scheduled ELA and math testing for the building in the coming days.

Summer school and staffing: the district reported summer-school enrollment and staffing plans. Administrators said 227 elementary students have accepted invitations to summer school; 42 students are scheduled to attend Stratford Elementary and 85 students were listed for another site (the transcript did not specify the second site's name). Middle school registrations stood at 24, and high school staff are reaching out to students at risk of course noncompletion to offer credit-recovery options. District staff said they are hiring teachers and support staff for summer programming and encouraged high-school students seeking volunteer hours to contact the district.

Operations and facilities: Dr. Paul Kim, the assistant superintendent for operations, described three recent facilities items: a second-year controlled field burn to remove thistle north of the high school; a renovation and irrigation project on the field west of Anchor Point Elementary funded in part by the Anchor Point PTO and the Bennington Soccer Association; and newly rebuilt dugouts at Hickey Field completed with assistance from the Bennington Baseball Association.

Why it matters: the reading focus will determine intervention and curriculum resources; summer-school staffing and capacity determine which students receive targeted remediation; facility projects affect recess, athletics and community use of district fields.

Questions and next steps: staff said they will bring a social-studies textbook purchase recommendation at the next board meeting; they will continue hiring for summer programs and finalize summer-site assignments. The district did not present budget line items for each summer or facilities project during the April meeting.
