Board approves student trips and hears update on regional Student U community schools initiative

Field trips approved by voice vote included: West Columbus High School to the North Carolina FFA Center (White Lake, July 28–August 1), West Columbus officer leadership camps, the North Carolina Envirothon (Burlington, May 2–3), the Columbus County Indian Education trip to the NICNEO conference at UNCW (June dates), and Tabor City School’s National Beta Club trip to Orlando, Florida (June) and an in‑state visit to Brookgreen Gardens (Murrells Inlet, South Carolina) on April 17. The superintendent recommended approval and the board acted on the motions as presented.
Separately, staff described Student U Community Schools—a Sandhills Regional Education Consortium grant‑funded effort to develop full‑service community schools in the region. The program’s goals are integrated student supports, expanded learning, family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership. Staff said a regional coordinator was expected to be hired by June and a local community schools coordinator at one district high school by January 2026, with plans to expand programming as the grant rollout proceeds.
Board members approved the field trips and thanked staff for the Student U update.
