District staff said the policy is intended as a framework to help teachers distinguish acceptable uses (for idea generation, rubric creation or lesson planning) from impermissible uses (unattributed submission of AI‑generated work), and to give teachers discretion to require demonstrations of foundational skills.
Student representatives told the board students already use AI tools for idea generation and, in some cases, for more substantive assistance; board members and staff discussed academic‑integrity concerns and the need for teacher training and communication to parents. A board member said the policy is not a ban but a structure that allows the district to teach ethical and appropriate AI use; staff said building teams and professional learning communities will work to align assignments and expectations across grade levels and subjects.
The policy committee recommended annual review and updates because AI tools and guidance from state or national authorities are evolving quickly. The board voted to adopt the policy and regulation and scheduled the July 1 implementation date to permit staff development and clear public communication before the school year.
