Poteau SEC highlights programs, grants and student achievements at board meeting

A staff member representing the Poteau Seventh and Eighth Grade Center (SEC) briefed the Poteau School District Board on the school’s programs, extracurricular offerings and recent awards.

The presenter described the SEC’s mission “to provide a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every student is valued and celebrated for their unique talents and abilities,” and said the school works to bridge students from elementary school to high school with career-technology and STEM pathways. The presentation listed arts, band, choir and drama expansions, athletics, National Junior Honor Society and a student academic team that advanced in state-level competition.

The SEC reported that students competed in TSA (Technology Student Association) events and that several students qualified for national-level competition. The presenter said the school offers career and technology classes, FFA and other career-preparation activities, including KTC and ICAP programs.

School leadership announced a $25,000 grant from Casey’s Cash for Classrooms that the district said will be used for campus improvements, including weather-resistant furniture for an outdoor deck and other outdoor and gym-related projects. The SEC also reported receiving a $1,500 award from the Professional Oklahoma Educators Foundation for Excellence in recognition of efforts to embed character education into school processes.

The presenter cited community partnerships that support student needs, noting programs such as an “angel tree” and other local donations that assisted students’ participation in competitions. Teachers recognized during the presentation included Katie Stubbs, the FACTS teacher and site teacher of the year, and Tara Lamb, honored as a district teacher at a regional event.

The board received the report; no formal action was required. The presentation was placed in the meeting record for the board’s information.
