Lake Oswego board authorizes pool conversion and classroom door-hardware contracts

The Lake Oswego School District Contract Review Board on April 14 authorized two contracts for facilities work: a $837,000 lump-sum contract with First Cascade Corporation to convert a former pool into a multipurpose gym space, and a $181,805.34 contract with Precision Locksmith Service, Inc., to standardize classroom door hardware across the district.

District staff described the pool conversion as a decommissioning of the existing pool and “filling in the hole” to create a large wood‑floored multipurpose space. Tony Van told the board the project will reuse the gymnasium floor from the old Lake Oswego Junior High in the large volume space that is currently the naturium, install basketball goals (one main court plus four side courts), upgrade fixtures and lighting, refurbish some locker rooms, paint the exterior and patch siding, and decommission mechanical rooms. Van said the board is not planning to demolish the building now, noting that removing the building could reduce square footage and complicate permitting with adjacent green space.

The door-hardware project covers classroom doors districtwide except for the two newest buildings. The district engaged a door-hardware consultant to create standardized specifications intended to provide consistent in-classroom lockdown features; Precision Locksmith Service was the lowest responsive bidder for the specialized work, at a lump sum of $181,805.34. District staff told the board that the scope is primarily interior classroom hardware and that ADA accessibility and some exterior automation work will continue to be evaluated separately.

Both motions were made and approved by voice vote during the contract review board session. The pool conversion motion authorized the clerk to execute a contract with First Cascade Corporation for the full conversion project in a lump sum amount of $837,000. The door-hardware motion authorized the clerk or deputy clerk to execute a contract with Precision Locksmith Service, Inc., for the classroom door-hardware enhancement project in the amount shown.

The projects are scheduled to proceed under standard district procurement and permitting processes. District staff noted some salvage and reuse of recently replaced hardware from Forest Hills and Lake Grove Technology schools may occur pending bond and construction timelines.

Votes at the meeting were taken by voice; the motions were adopted with recorded “ayes” on the floor.
