James Island business group outlines welcome packet, online licensing and signage help; tourism site to use accommodations tax funds

Members of the Town of James Island Business Development Council met informally Monday to discuss ways to support small businesses through a welcome packet, clearer guidance on business licensing and signage, and use of accommodations-tax funds to launch a town tourism website.

The discussion focused on making the town’s business-license process easier to navigate, helping new operators understand interlocking requirements (zoning, building permits, fire inspection and state reviews), and promoting licensed businesses through a new site, visitjamesisland.com. "It's on GoGov," Melissa Fleck, town staff who works with business licensing, said of the application system, adding she can locate a license number in the county system and link it to permit online payments.

Why it matters: Council members said many entrepreneurs start small and are deterred by paperwork or do not know which permits and inspections are required. Clearing those steps and directing visitors to local businesses are intended to increase compliance and local spending while easing the burden on proprietors.
