The Grand Prairie Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday approved a specific use permit for Truck Smart CDL Academy at 2080 North Highway 360, limiting operations at that site to classroom instruction and administrative functions and prohibiting on‑site driving practice, maneuvering exercises or parking and storage of oversized commercial vehicles.
Planning staff said the site is an existing multi‑story office building in a light industrial zone and that the applicant leases classroom space at the location. Staff and the Development Review Committee recommended narrowing the permitted operations to exclude driving practice at the site; the applicant leases separate property in another city for trailer storage and driver training maneuvers.
The applicant, Abdul (address given in the record as 2080 North Highway 360, Unit 135), said he hopes in the future to work with the Texas Workforce Commission and local school districts to expand training opportunities for students seeking commercial driver licenses. “That would be a dream come true in the future,” Abdul said, noting the plan is still at an early stage.
Commissioner John Federico moved to approve SUP‑25‑02‑000 with the additional modification that no practicing or maneuvering exercises of any kind be conducted at the location; Commissioner Frank Gonzales seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff emphasized the approved operations are limited to classroom and administrative uses; any driving practice must occur at a separate leased facility as described by the applicant.
