The Denton Historic Landmark Commission agreed to create a community outreach subcommittee to help plan education, marketing and events tied to the city’s historic preservation work.
Miss Roberts and the commission discussed a range of outreach ideas drawn from the 2019 Historic Preservation Plan and recent meetings: a neighborhood liaison program (neighborhood captains for districts), a Young Preservationist Committee with internships, a crowdsourced historic-map portal, Porchfest events featuring local musicians, historic fun runs, and cemetery activations in nonactive cemeteries. Roberts said the city currently maintains outreach channels including a Preserve Denton Instagram account and the Denton Revealed preservation month program.
Commissioners discussed pros and cons of formal neighborhood liaisons, concerns about public perception (liaisons should not be viewed as an HOA or gatekeepers) and the need to avoid "walking quorum" violations during planning. Commissioners suggested partnering with Denton County Office of History and Culture, Denton Public Library, Main Street Association, UNT and TWU, local makerspaces and music groups.
The commission asked staff whether they preferred a small formal subcommittee or a broader, all-commission effort. Miss Roberts explained a 2–3 member subcommittee "is more formal in terms of where staff and the city are protected from not having walking form issues" and would provide primary points of contact for event planning.
Commissioners Treat and Gregory volunteered to serve on the subcommittee. After asking for a show of hands on adding the subcommittee to the commission’s project matrix, Roberts said she would "bring that back in May." Several commissioners expressed willingness to help with events; the commission settled on option 1 (a formal subcommittee) to move forward with outreach planning.
Staff outlined early scheduling for Denton Revealed events, including ribbon-cutting plaque unveilings at 1526 Willowwood and 1900 West Ridge Street on May 3, a walking tour tied to a neighborhood considering designation, and a Denton vintage short film fest hosted in partnership with UNT scheduled for the month.
