Council notes Danforth–Kelly safety project; federal funds to cover majority of nearly $9.7M construction cost

The Edmond City Council heard a staff briefing on a planned safety and capacity improvement at the Danforth and Kelly intersection and approved consent items that include the project.
City Engineer Steve Lawrence told council the intersection has the highest rate of accidents in Edmond’s roadway system. The project will add turn lanes and other safety improvements; construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
Staff reported an estimated $9,700,000 construction cost and said about $7,400,000 in federal funds will be provided through the city’s participation in the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (roughly 76% of the construction cost). Because federal funds are involved, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will oversee project construction. Staff attributed the change in Edmond’s share of the cost to construction cost inflation beyond expectations.
Council accepted the consent items without further objection. Staff emphasized the project as a primary mechanism for bringing federal dollars to Edmond and for improving safety at the identified intersection.
