Senior prom turnout and summer programs: staff preview summer camps, kickoff and travel trips

At the April 14 Wylie Parks and Recreation Board meeting, staff provided program and event updates that included senior programming attendance figures, summer camp registration, a free summer kickoff event on May 30 and upcoming travel offerings.
The board was briefed on program participation levels and outreach because these events drive community engagement and may require additional publicity to reach residents who do not regularly visit the rec center.
Carmen, a Parks and Recreation staff member, said summer camp registrations are open and staff are "rapidly gearing up for summer." Carmen reported the senior prom on April 11 had 119 participants, which she described as the program's second-highest enrollment to date. She outlined the summer kickoff at the complex on May 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; the free event will include summer camp sign-ups, instructor meet-and-greets, bounce houses, a train in the back park area, food trucks and other activities.
Carmen also summarized travel programming: a Holland and Belgium springtime river cruise scheduled April 20–30 has 24 people signed up; registration is open for a Discover British Landscapes trip in May 2026 that, according to staff, will include bus transportation, flight, travel insurance, hotels, 12 meals and tours. Carmen said the minimum age for these travel trips is 55.
Board member Gloria urged broader publication of senior-center programming, saying residents who do not visit the center regularly may not see flyers. Gloria said staff could consider additional channels beyond in-center flyers. Board member Turner suggested the city's Connection magazine (which is distributed to homeowners) and signage at the rec center as possible outlets; another board member noted the department's social media and Facebook presence as additional channels.
Carmen closed by confirming the program list and encouraging board members to advise staff about outreach opportunities. No formal votes were taken on programs at the meeting.
