Planning commission approves massage therapy business on Colleyville Boulevard, 4-3

The Colleyville Planning and Zoning Commission on April 14 voted 4-3 to recommend approval of a special use permit for a massage therapy business at 4508 Colleyville Boulevard, Suite B.

Staff told the commission the applicant had completed the required certificate-of-occupancy review with the police department. The land development code requires a special use permit for massage therapy businesses in commercial zones and imposes spacing and licensing requirements; staff recommended approval after reviewing the applicant’s CO, floor plan and business plan.

Applicant Sudara Tanwichi described the business as an “authentic Thai massage” concept with licensed therapists on staff. Commissioners asked about practitioner licensing and employment plans. Tanwichi said at least one partner is a licensed massage therapist and that the business would hire staff with required credentials and that the operation would include treatments oriented toward wellness.

Commission debate focused on practitioner qualifications, services proposed and the applicant’s history operating a similar business in the region. Commissioner Groves and Commissioner Savoy voted against the recommendation at the commission level; Commissioner Obinabo, Remley, Arnold and Ebert voted for approval. The motion to approve was made by Commissioner Obinabo and seconded by Commissioner Ebert; the recommendation passed 4-3.

The commission’s favorable recommendation will go to City Council for final action. If approved by council, the applicant will proceed with permitting and building inspections under the city’s regulatory framework.
