Mount Olive board hears rise in school lunch participation and completes district energy audit

The Mount Olive Township School District's Finance and Operations Committee reported higher meal participation and an energy audit during its April meeting, and discussed future repair costs for the district's dome turf facility.
"At this point in the school year, our lunches participation is up 35, breakfasts are up 7%, and we are not at the end of the year," Finance Committee chair Mrs. Fitzgerald said, describing Mid- year results for the district's food service vendor, Macchio's. She reported a daily increase in a la carte sales of about $905.
Nut graf: Increased participation suggests growing use of the district's food service program, but leaders said they will survey families in May after observing that roughly 30 percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals are not using the service. The district also completed an energy audit and reviewed the dome turf facility's finances to plan for future repairs.
Mrs. Fitzgerald told the board the district will survey families in May to understand barriers preventing eligible students from using free or reduced lunches. She said lunch participation growth is on pace with or exceeding last year's entire school-year totals.
The committee reviewed revenues and expenses for the dome turf facility and concluded the program is currently profitable, but members discussed anticipating and planning for future repairs and replacements. The finance chair said the committee will monitor upcoming capital needs.
The district also completed an energy audit, submitted on April 10, which the committee said will be analyzed next month to identify potential energy savings. Committee members noted these audits are part of ongoing operational reviews the district has undertaken this school year.
Ending: The board reminded the public the district's preliminary budget hearing is scheduled for April 28; committee members said follow-up reports on the survey and energy audit will appear in future meetings.
