Planning commission approves Norwalk High School baseball and softball site plan

The plan will rotate the softball diamond 90 degrees, shift it slightly east, remove existing dugouts, press boxes and the concession building, and replace them with upgraded facilities. The proposal also reduces two on-site softball diamonds to a single, larger diamond and adjusts walking paths to fit the new footprint. Commission staff and the applicant said existing parking will not change as part of this phase of work.
Elliot (staff member) presented the proposal to the commission, describing the changes as “relatively straightforward” and showing visuals of the revised site layout. The commission asked whether the plan left room to add parking later; Elliot said there are possible locations for future parking near a practice field and by the former middle school baseball area to the west.
When asked if the middle-school softball diamond would be removed, Elliot responded that the smaller diamond would be replaced by the new configuration. James (project engineer, Bishop) and Richard (project representative) were present to answer technical questions. The applicant's representative, speaking for Norwalk Community Schools, said the work was “just long overdue” and expressed support for improving the site.
Commissioner Thompson moved to approve the site plan; Commissioner Samuelson seconded. The commission voted unanimously to approve the plan: Thompson — aye; Steiger — aye; Samuelson — aye; Forrest — aye; Eaton — aye; Reagan — aye. Luke (staff) called the roll and announced the outcome.
The commission record notes that no changes to parking are part of the current approval; staff and commissioners discussed potential future parking additions but did not direct immediate work or adopt conditions requiring additional spaces. No ordinances, statutes or other legal authorities were cited during the discussion.
The commission's next meeting was set for April 28, 2025, at 5:45 p.m.
