Public works updates: culvert delivery, oil bids, Lake Chaparral request and track-loader repairs discussed

Public Works presented multiple operational updates at the April 14 Linn County commission meeting, including roadwork logistics, paving-season oil bids, a private-property assistance request from Lake Chaparral residents and a decision to authorize repairs on a county track loader.

Jesse Walton, interim public works director, told commissioners a 15-foot section of culvert for the 900 Road project had been delivered and crews were preparing the site before setting culverts. He also presented three vendor bids for paving-season materials: Vance Brothers, Briadil (Bridal) Asphalt Products, and Coastal Energy Corporation, with per-gallon prices and handling charges summarized for commissioners to review.

Walton described a request from residents of Lake Chaparral asking the county to mow and clear brush from a private dam. He said the request was from a community group rather than a single landowner and that similar assistance has been provided previously for school districts and municipalities. Walton told the commission that the project would not be high on the public works priority list and suggested keeping the application on file and re-reviewing it in three to six months. He offered to visit the site and estimate hours and manpower required if the residents wanted that information.

Public Works also reported on landfill equipment. Walton presented a report from Foley assessing the condition of the county's 953 track loader, noting the machine has about 10,000 operating hours and components such as tracks and pads are nearing the end of their life. Walton asked the commission to authorize parts purchases up to $30,000 to repair the machine so it can be returned to service. The commission approved that authorization by a 2-1 vote; Walton said county mechanics would perform the work and additional outside help could be brought in if needed.

Commissioner discussion and next steps included ordering parts and returning to the board with a repair completion report. Commissioners also deferred a gazebo repair/replacement decision and agreed to ask public works to evaluate cost and delivery options for a replacement structure.

Ending Public Works will proceed to obtain parts and estimates for the Lake Chaparral request and gazebo alternatives and will return to the board with cost and schedule details.
