Plan commission approves Trine University training center; condition requires plan-review sign-offs

The Angola Plan Commission on April 14 conditionally approved a development plan for an 8,150-square-foot Trine Family Training Center to be located at the northwest end of the university’s Shai Football Field.
Planning staff described the facility as a metal-sided building with glazed windows that will add a new weight room and restrooms with showers for student-athletes. The facility site is adjacent to the football field and was described in staff materials as consistent with the City of Angola comprehensive plan designation of the area as institutional.
Justin Hoffman of Brooks Construction, civil engineer for the project, said the building will sit close to existing field concrete and that the team is working through utility reroutes and minor civil-plan revisions that were returned to the city on the Friday before the hearing. He told commissioners that some concrete near the goalposts will be removed and that the project aims to retain campus green space and sightlines to the field.
Commissioners asked whether the planned vacation of Thunder Drive would affect the project; staff replied that the drive is slated for a Common Council agenda and that the vacation is expected to be resolved before construction begins. The commission’s motion approved the development plan with conditions requiring all plan-review and routing comments be adequately addressed; the motion carried by voice vote.
