Riley County commissioners approve minutes, travel authorization and staff training funding

The Riley County Commission on April 14 voted to approve the minutes from its April 10 meeting, to authorize an out-of-state training trip for a county emergency management staffer and to fund county participation in two leadership development programs.
The commission approved the minutes as presented without recorded roll-call names. Commissioners later approved an out-of-state travel authorization for Robert Cox, a county staff member participating in an Emergency Management Institute class in Emmitsburg, Maryland, May 5–8, 2025; the county will reimburse up to $300 for a meals ticket required by the institute. The travel request was presented by Laurie Harrison and was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The commission also voted to solicit applications and commit funding to send county employees to two leadership programs in 2025: the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy (an online program) and the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program. Human Resources recommended selecting two employees for each program and a total county commitment of $5,190. That motion was moved, seconded and approved by the board.
Each vote was taken by motion, second and unrecorded voice vote of “Aye” as reflected in the meeting record. No individual commissioner roll-call votes were recorded in the transcript for these items.
The approvals came during a meeting that also included detailed staff reports on county budgets, jail medical and inmate-care costs, a presentation on electric vehicle readiness for the region, updates from Public Works and a briefing on a recent large prescribed burn that escaped containment in the Harmony Road area.
The commission did not provide additional conditions in the minutes or travel approvals beyond the reimbursements and program funding described above.
