Board approves new K–5 ELA curriculum purchase after multi-stage review

District curriculum staff recommended purchasing Magnetic Reading and Magnetic Reading Foundations (K–5) at a total cost of $71,159.28 using PRC 131 funds. Staff said they began the adoption process by surveying materials used across the state, narrowed the options, provided digital and physical access to candidate resources at the district’s four elementary schools for more than four weeks, and solicited feedback from school teams. Staff also reported that 13 other North Carolina districts use the recommended resource and that some are in early implementation stages and awaiting data.
If approved, staff said they would schedule professional development during the required workday at the start of the school year; curriculum team planning is scheduled for the second and third weekends in June to build implementation materials and align the resource to Caswell County’s calendar.
Board members asked whether other districts’ data could be directly attributed to the resource; staff replied that other districts use multiple supports and cannot certainly isolate effect to this curriculum but that feedback has been largely positive. The motion to adopt the recommended ELA materials was moved and recorded as approved in the meeting minutes.
