The board noted that if a structure failed the county would need to close a road, survey the site and pursue environmental clearances before reconstruction, and that local dollars can move faster than state funds if immediate repairs are required.
Votes and motions: The board voted “Aye” on motions to approve the Humboldt County FY26 secondary roads budget and the county FY2026 Iowa DOT construction program. The supervisors also voted to move forward with mower purchases after receiving two vendor quotes and reviewing equipment options. A motion to accept and place on file several annual manure-management plans was also approved.
Equipment and procurement details: Staff said two local vendors furnished quotes, identifying vendors as Casey Nielsen (vendor) and Ziegler Cat; the board narrowed choices to two top options and budgeted $300,000 for mower-tractor units. Staff noted the county plans to trade in two older tractors (manufactured about 2017 and older models) and that one tractor type had recurring hydraulic tank issues tied to the model configuration.
The board emphasized flexibility in the five-year program, saying projects can be advanced if a structure fails. Staff said environmental clearances often determine the timeline when state funding is used and that local funds allow quicker responses.
