County to temporarily cover AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP work after federal grant not renewed

Jeff Clark, who presented to the board on the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program, said he received notice the federal RSVP grant would not be renewed after roughly 30 years of funding.
"We received notification recently that after 30 years, we're not getting our RSVP grant. It's not gonna be renewed," Clark said. He told the board the notice arrived with less lead time than expected and that the program helps hundreds of seniors by placing volunteers at stations throughout the county.
Clark said the county's department has sufficient payroll funds to cover the program through the end of the current fiscal year and that staff are considering moving the program "in-house" thereafter. He said, as discussed with county administration, staff could move about $7,000 from a food nutrition account to cover payroll through May and bring a line-item transfer to the board for formal approval if needed.
Why it matters: RSVP provides structured volunteer opportunities for older residents and pays part of two staff positions that support the program. Clark said the program has quantified volunteer hours and assists many local organizations.
