Moore council adopts utility benefit policy for surviving spouses of officers killed on duty

The policy was approved as an amendment to the city’s personnel policy and procedures manual. The council moved and seconded the resolution and the motion passed with all members present voting yes.
Mayor (presiding) said the resolution mirrors legislation being advanced by State Senator Darryl Weaver and noted the policy was modeled on an existing program in the city of Edmond. “This ordinance is just gonna mirror basically what the state law is probably going to be,” the mayor said. He added, “I hate that it took that to get us to this point, and it’s something that we should have done a long time ago.”
Brooks, a city staff member identified in the meeting, was cited as the staff contact to answer technical questions about the policy. Council members did not request changes to the text during the meeting.
The vote was recorded as follows: Melissa Hunt — yes; Louie Williams — yes; Adam Webb — yes; Rob Clark — yes; Kathy Griffith — yes; Sid Porter — yes; Mark Ham — yes.
The mayor said he hoped the city never had to use the benefit. The resolution and the related amendment to the personnel manual will be added to the city’s human resources policies for implementation by staff.
