Board asks Culture & Climate committee to draft resolution affirming support for LGBTQ+ and immigrant students

During work-group reports the Stoughton Area School District Board tasked the Culture & Climate work group with drafting a resolution expressing the district’s support for all students, with language that would specifically name LGBTQ+ and immigrant students.
Board member Mia Coyle asked that the work group craft a “full-throated” resolution so the district could clearly communicate its values at a time when some students are hearing legislation and public debate targeting those populations, she said. Coyle acknowledged a resolution has no legal force but would send a public message. Several board members voiced support and the board chair said the work group should draft the language and return it to the full board for consideration. Board members noted that if non–work-group members wish to assist in drafting they should contact the committee.
The board did not take a formal vote on the resolution; members agreed there was no opposition to having the Culture & Climate committee draft and return a proposed resolution for adoption at a later meeting.
