Middletown highlights middle-school ‘legacy plan’ and previews free summer programs for K–11

District leaders showcased a new middle-school legacy plan of academics, cultural assemblies, athletics and attendance incentives and outlined more than 20 free summer programs (K–11) with registration May 2–June 6 and provided sites, transportation and meal provisions.
District administrators and middle-school staff presented the middle-school “legacy plan” and a preview of the 2025 summer programs at the Enlarged City School District of Middletown Board of Education meeting on April 10.
District officials described the legacy plan as an action step aligned to the district strategic plan that combines morning intramurals, cultural assemblies, expanded elective offerings, mentoring, extended-day academic supports and attendance incentives intended to create a coherent middle-school experience. Staff noted new electives such as civics and expanded financial-literacy work; they also described bilingual, dual-language and Seal of Biliteracy initiatives and scholar-led cultural assemblies tied to Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month.
Staff said the district is using grade-level competitions and incentives — such as movie afternoons and an ice-cream social previously used at middle grades — to boost attendance and engagement. The presentation cited morning basketball intramurals, Passport Club for English learners, a Lighthouse leadership team and an eSports night as examples of programs intended to increase connections and attendance.
The board also received a preview of the district’s summer offerings. Assistant Superintendent Adoma and staff said the district will offer more than 20 free summer programs for incoming kindergarteners through eleventh graders, including academic support, academic enrichment, music, STEM, art, sports and robotics. Programs will run at Maple Hill Elementary, William A. Carter Elementary, Monhagen Middle School and Middletown High School. Registration opens May 2 through Arbiter (Family ID) and closes June 6; during an initial registration window families may register a scholar for one program and will be able to join wait lists. The district confirmed all programs are free, include bus transportation and provide meals.
Board members praised the work and the video highlight reel of middle-school activities; members asked questions about attendance incentives and expressed support for expanded programming and professional development.
