Two members of the Salinas Traffic and Transportation Commission asked staff Thursday to place two traffic-safety topics on a future commission agenda: installing a left-turn signal on Myrtle Street near the Department of Motor Vehicles and evaluating a blinking crosswalk beacon at Granada Avenue in the Laurel neighborhood.
Commissioner Guerrero said traffic queuing and impatient drivers near the DMV create crash risks and asked that the commission pursue a left-turn signal similar to a nearby intersection with a signalized left turn. “I drive through the DMV and I almost got a couple of accidents because people are so impatient,” Guerrero said.
Commissioner Hernandez asked that staff investigate installing a flashing pedestrian beacon at the Granada Avenue crosswalk near a local school, noting previous fatalities in the area and saying the South Side has similar beacons. Guerrero and another commissioner volunteered to be the two commissioners needed to request agenda placement; Chair Pearson confirmed staff will add the items to a future agenda and investigate the requests. Chair Pearson cautioned the commission that a staff response could be informational rather than a formal recommendation back to the commission.
No formal motions or votes were taken on either item during the meeting. Staff said it would investigate and return either as informational items or as recommendations in a later meeting, depending on the findings and staff workload.
